Sustainable fuels producer LanzaJet opened its Freedom Pines Fuels plant in Soperton, Georgia, in late January. The world’s first ethanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel production facility, according to LanzaJet, it will annually produce 10 million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel from low-carbon and certified ethanol.
LanzaJet’s process converts ethanol into synthetic paraffinic kerosene or diesel in accordance with ASTM D7566 standards, which permits blending up to 50% with conventional jet fuel. The company can use any source of ethanol, including that produced from municipal solid waste, agriculture residues, industrial off-gases and biomass.
The company aims to have 1 billion gallons of annual SAF production globally by 2030. Last year, it announced plans to build significantly larger facilities in Australia and the U.K., and it is also exploring a potential project in the UAE.
